The circuit runs on public road threading through the financial district, past colonial-era facades and along the water. To light it for that first year, organisers installed around 1,500 floodlights connected by roughly 108 kilometres of cabling. The result was a surface roughly four times brighter than a football stadium, bright enough to meet high-definition broadcast standards and, importantly, bright enough that drivers at speed could judge braking points without relying on daylight depth cues.

The sceptics were answered in the opening practice session. The light was consistent. Shadows at the track walls were manageable. What nobody had fully anticipated was how the city itself would respond: the skyline, the bay, the towers lit from below and reflected in the water turned a street circuit into something that looked like no other venue on the calendar. That visual has kept Singapore in a category of its own ever since.

Heat and humidity shaped the schedule too.
